Special Unit for Children in LUMS

Hyderabad:01 February: A special unit for children with club foot deformity was inaugurated at the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) on Friday.
The disability is treated through Ponseti technique, being practiced worldwide, at the centre.
The unit, which had started functioning in mid-2003 is now providing its services at the Liaquat University Hospital’s city branch free of cost in collaboration with the Ponseti International Association and the provincial government.
LUMHS vice chancellor Prof Dr Noshad A. Shaikh inaugurated the special unit and said that about 200 children had already benefitted from the service. He said that healthcare workers in the underprivileged areas with limited access to surgical facilities could be trained to use this method.
Orthopaedic surgery and traumatology department chairman Prof Mohammad Ayoub Leghari said it required a child, be it a newborn or a two-year-old baby, to go through multiple numbers of plasters on the foot with a gap of a week or so. After these back to back plasters, a minor surgery called tenotomy was performed before last plaster for a period of three weeks, he added. “Then we give a special shoe — Denis Brown — to the patient for use till the age of four or five years,” he explained.
He observed that children having club foot was very common as one in 1000 is born with this deformity.Dawn.
