30 protesting contractual teachers not to be regularised

Karachi:February 02:Almost 30 contractual teachers who took part in a protest against the education department on Tuesday will not be regularised for the time being.

The statement came on Wednesday from Education Minister Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq, who said the IBA-qualified teachers were assured that they would be regularised on the completion of their three-year terms. However, some teachers opted to launch a protest outside the Karachi Press Club against the department and took to the streets, creating problems for law enforcement agencies and passers-by during their protest, he further said.

Such teachers had violated the terms and conditions of the World Bank and “their behaviour gave a bad impression to society”, he said, adding that the education department had therefore decided that they would not be regularised right now.

The education minister said that their cases would be reviewed later. Meanwhile, the department decided that contractual teachers who passed the test from Sindh University would be regularised after the completion of their contract terms, he said.

The education department would advertise the posts of teachers in the local media as it had decided to appoint over 14, 000 teachers on merit, he added. On Tuesday evening, police used water canon and batons to disperse hundreds of contractual teachers, who had gathered outside the press club and wanted to march on the Chief Minister House to press the government to regularise them.

During the protest, the governor issued an ordinance giving permanent jobs to 5,800 teachers.
