Pakistani universities with QS World University Rankings; but no improvements

KARACHI:June 12: In the World University Rankings 2018, around 950 universities of different categories were compared from more than 80 countries by Quacquarelli Symonds but any of the six Pakistani varsities could not improve its positions as compare to the last year.
Discovering the best universities around the globe the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has ranked six Pakistani universities in World University Rankings inclusive National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) Islamabad, Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad, Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore , University of Karachi and University of Lahore.

Quacquarelli Symonds is a British company specializing in education and study abroad. The company was founded in 1990 by Nunzio Quacquarelli and Matt Symonds. It offers publications, programs and events to expand the scope of study abroad.

According to QS World University Rankings (WUR) data, the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) Islamabad was ranked at 501 among 550 universities in the World University Ranking overall and also ranked as one of the top 250 universities in the world for electrical engineering by Subject in the ranking year 2017. NUST has been placed at 431 among 440 universities in WUR, ranked at 251 by Subject among 300 universities in the ranking year 2018. NUST is at 112 in Asian University Ranking (AUR) which has remained same since 2016. The data shows that NUST did not improve its position further but lost one point in Subject Ranking 2018.

The Quaid-i-Azam University also famous as Islamabad University, its WUR was at 701 in 2017. The university was at 651 among 700 universities in the World University Rankings in 2016 amazingly in the ranking year 2018 university has fall down to the same position and could not hold its 2017 WUR position. The varsity has also lost its position by Subject Ranking, for Agriculture and Forestry, as it was at 151 in 2014-15 but now Quaid-i-Azam University is at 251 among 300 varsities while its position in Asian University Ranking has also been unimproved.

Similarly, Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), a private research university has been placed at 701 in WUR out of 750. Its Asian Ranking is 111 and by Subject Ranking, LUMS is at 251 among 300 universities. Surprisingly, LUMS is getting the same position in WUR for past three as it was 701 since 2016.

In the category of engineering varsities, University of Engineering & Technology (UET) Lahore has dropped its World University Ranking from 701 to 801 in the ranking year 2018. This global ranking was awarded by QS after the comparison among 1000 varsities around all over the world. UET also lost its position in Ranking by Subject for Electric Engineering as its number was 351 among 400 universities last year and this position was at 251 in 2016 which could not be improved by UET.

The UET ranking in Asian University Ranking is also unimproved because it was at 241 among 250 last year and its status is same this year also.

University of Karachi has lost WUR's position by 100 points, UoK was awarded with number 701 among 1000 varsities around the globe in 2016-17 but for the year 2018 UoK has been placed at 801.Its ranking by Subject for Pharmacy and Pharmacology is at 201 among 250 and Asian University Ranking is 201 among 201.

As like UoK, the University of Lahore has also lost global ranking by 100 points. UoL was ranked 701 among 1000 varsities last year. In WUR 2018, number of UoL is 801 while it has no Ranking by Subject and Asian University Ranking.Daily Times.
