Centre has approved Rs1 billion for construction of new SMIU campus’

Karachi:June 10:The federal government has approved the proposed construction of a new campus of the Sindh Madressatul Islam University at Education City, Karachi, SMIU Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh announced on Friday.

The VC, who was briefing journalists on SMIU’s admissions policy at a presser, said the federal government has agreed to provide Rs1 billion for the project, of which Rs150 million would be released first.

He announced that a SMIU Model School branch would be operational at the Education City, on the premises of SMIU’s Malir Campus, from August 2017.

The varsity would soon also have two new academic departments, English Language and Development Studies, the latter being largely focused on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and the opportunities it entails for Pakistanis.

VS Shaikh said SMIU had entered into collaborations with international universities and educational institutes of China, UK, Turkey and Malaysia. “21 students of SMIU have already completed internship programmes in China.”

Speaking on SMIU’s enrollment trends, he remarked that the numbers only seem to be increasing with every passing year. “Last year we had 1,997 students applying for admission, only 650 of whom managed to make it through our rigid and transparent selection process.”

“Our aim is to provide these students quality education with the due national and international exposure; that is where most of our public sector universities severely lack. At SMIU, around 25 percent of the student body receives scholarships.”

Earlier, Furqan Iftikhar, the varsity’s admissions director and controller of examinations, announced that admissions for the Fall 2017 programme would start from July 2, 2017, and continue till July 21.

Faculty of Information Technology Dean Professor Dr Syed Asif Ali, Registrar Gulzar Ahmed Mughal, QEC In-Charge Ambreen Barwani, and the principal of the SMIU Model School, Nabila Kanwal, also spoke at the press conference which concluded with a question and answer session. The news.
