Prof Fariduddin Baqai passes away

Karachi:11July:Professor Fariduddin Baqai, chancellor of the Baqai Medical University, passed away on Sunday night. He was 82 years old.
The deceased left behind a widow, Zahida Baqai, and a son, Shoaib Baqai. According to an announcement, Prof Baqai died of natural causes and passed away peacefully in his sleep.

Born on May 22, 1935, Fariduddin Baqai acquired his MBBS degree from the Dow Medical College in 1958 and joined the Spencer Eye Hospital. However, he soon got associated with the Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre for having interest in surgery. Later on, he left for UK for higher education and during this period he did his FRCS (Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons) in Edinburgh.

Prof Baqai also served the Pakistan Navy from 1965 to 1969 and the Combined Military Hospital, Rawalpindi, in 1971. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan conferred upon him its fellowship in 1993.

Prof Baqai, one of the pioneers of the Community Oriented Medical Education (COME) in Pakistan, had established the Baqai Hospital in the Nazimabad area in 1969 and founded the Baqai Medical University in 1987, where he established more than 35 affiliated institutions.

These institutions include the Baqai Medical college, the Baqai Dental College, the Baqai Post Graduate Medical Institute, the Baqai Institute of Medical Technology, the Institute of Haematology, the Institute of Oncology and the College of Nursing.
