FUUAST bags two research awards by HEC

Karachi:June 25:The Federal Urdu University of Arts, Sciences and Technology (FUUAST) managed to secure awards in two separate categories at the 5th Annual Outstanding Research Awards organised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) at its secretariat on Friday.

The only other institute from Sindh that also secured an HEC award was the National Centre of Excellence in Analytical Chemistry of Sindh University in Jamshoro.

The awards were given in four categories: best research paper, best young research scholar, best innovator and best book in eight sub-disciplines.

Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, federal minister for science and technology Rana Tanveer Hussain said education was the single most effective means to ensure socio-economic development of any country since it developed and provided skilled human resource to run the economy. He appreciated the contribution of HEC in promotion of research culture in the country while emphasising the need to harmonising research activities with national needs.

“We have to focus on need-based research so that it can be of practical benefit for our economy,” he said.

The federal minister urged the researchers to focus on areas that could play significant roles in the country’s socio-economic development. He said that the role of HEC has been widely acclaimed owning to its programmes for the promotion of higher education in the country.

Chairman HEC Dr Mukhtar Ahmed while speaking on the occasion spoke of the commission’s achievements in promoting research culture in while keeping in mind national needs.

He said the number of research papers published in the country had increased from mere 800 in 2002 to 10,000 in 2015 by the commission’s initiatives of providing grants, patent filing support and offices of research, and collaborations with innovation and business incubation centres.
