Fake degree scandal: Two former MUET students booked in FIR

KARACHI:June 06:After the fake degree scandal at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) surfaced, the varsity has registered an FIR booking two former students for forging the degree.

The case was registered on Friday at the Jamshoro police station on the complaint of MUET examinations controller Suhail Ahmed Khatian, according to SHO Nazar Muhammad Deeshak.

The students, Kiran Kumar Luhana and Aijaz Iqbal Arain, are from the mechanical engineering department’s 1996 batch and have been nominated in the FIR. They have yet to be arrested. According to the complainant, Luhana and Arain forged the latter’s degree. After the incident, MUET also cancelled Luhana’s degree for his alleged involvement in helping Arain fabricate his degree. According to sources in the university, Arain was allegedly issued the degree on February 24, 2016. The scandal emerged more than a month later.

On May 7, the controller of examinations announced that Arain’s degree had been cancelled and, two days later, vice-chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Aslam Uqaili formed an inquiry committee to probe the matter.Published in The Express Tribune, June 6th, 2016.
