Fundraiser for special children at Special Children’s Educational Institute

Karachi:February 28:A two-day fundraising festival for special children will end on Sunday (today) at the Beach Luxury Hotel.

The festival is organised by the Special Children’s Educational Institute (SCEI) for the rehabilitation of special children and to help them learn and attain vocational skills.

According to Yasmin Hyder of the New World Concepts, a volunteer of the

SCEI, the organisation is being run by five or six social service-oriented women.

“The event is featuring artefacts crafted by special children and entertaining sessions are also being arranged,” she said.

Saima Haq, the founder-president of the institute, while talking to The News said an art poster competition by special children was held on Saturday and the results would be announced and prizes distributed on Sunday.

“We have to help these children and help them overcome the stigma in society whereby they are treated as castaways.”

She said around five percent of the births in Pakistan were those of children born with such disabilities.

This, she said, was on account of a lack of education and awareness that mostly women didn’t take a proper diet during pregnancy and they took medicines that must be avoided during the period.

She said they admitted children to the institute who were 12 years or above.

“The children has made included aero-models and crafted other items which we are being present here. It testifies to the indomitable nature of the human spirit.

“The children also have set up stalls of almost every household and kitchen item and there is also an astrologer and psychic.” She said the proceeds of the fair would go exclusively to the benefits of the special children. The news.
